How does a Butterfly Release work?
We ship live butterflies to you in a variety of packaging options for you to release. Our butterflies are shipped to arrive the day before your event and all necessary care and release instructions will be included. We offer two types of butterfly releases, an Individual Butterfly Release and a Mass Butterfly Release:

Individual Butterfly Release: The butterflies will be shipped in individual containers (there are a few designs to choose from). Once you are ready to release them, pass them out to your guests and each guest can release their own butterfly! Additionally, the guest can keep the individual container as a keepsake from your event.

Mass Butterfly Release: The butterflies will arrive within one large box. When you are ready to release the butterflies, simply pull the lid off the top of the mass release box (there are a variety of color combinations to choose from) and they will all fly out.

How do I order my butterflies?
You may order your butterflies online or over the phone at 407-309-6545. Orders placed online are entitled to a 5% discount, which will be applied automatically during the checkout process.

Where do you ship your butterflies to?
Painted Ladies can be shipped to any state in the Continental United States and Alaska, with the exception of New York.  Monarch butterflies can be shipped to any state in the Continental United States with the exception of: AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NV, NM, NY, OR, UT and WA. We cannot ship to these states since they lie on or west of the Continental Divide. The USDA does not permit the transit of live Monarch Butterflies over the Continental Divide.

When should I place my order?
The earlier the better. We recommend placing the order at least 2-3 weeks in advance in order to ensure availability. We cannot guarantee availability with short notice orders (orders placed less than 7 days in advance). Additionally, we often sell-out weeks in advance during peak months (May-August). Please contact us to ensure availability if your order is being placed less than 1 week in advance.

How many butterflies should I order?
For a Mass Release, a good rule of thumb is 1 butterfly for event 2 guests. For Individual Releases, you should order 1 butterfly per guest. The average customer orders 2-3 dozen butterflies.

When will I receive my butterflies?
The butterflies are shipped to arrive the day before your event for releases occurring Wednesday through Sunday. For Monday or Tuesday events, please call us or email us prior to placing an order to determine if delivery is possible. Please read our Terms of Sale for complete details. We recommend that someone is home to receive the butterflies on the day they are to arrive. The butterflies usually arrive before noon, but the exact time of day cannot be guaranteed. If it is not possible to have someone home to receive the package, we can have the butterflies shipped to another address. Please contact us well in advance of the shipping date to make any modifications.

What if I need to modify my order?
We will always do our best to accommodate changes. However, butterflies are reserved on a first come first serve basis. Orders and modifications should be made with as much advanced notice as possible.

How do you ship your butterflies and how do they survive?

Our butterflies are shipped overnight express with FedEx and will arrive the day before your event. The butterflies are packaged in an insulated cooler with freezer packs to keep the butterflies at a cool and comfortable temperature during their transit. Butterflies are cold-blooded insects. This means that when they are kept at cool temperatures, they enter a state of natural hibernation. Essentially, they will be asleep for the entire journey which keeps them safe and ensures their survival. Furthermore, all butterflies are fed and able to fly around prior to their shipment, ensuring that strong, vibrant and healthy butterflies arrive to your door.

Fun fact: Butterflies feed off of plant nectar, which is similar to Gatorade ®. We feed our butterflies Gatorade ® prior to transit. The electrolytes are the perfect replica of plant nutrients for them.

Do you guarantee your live butterflies and do you include extra butterflies?
We guarantee that our butterflies will arrive alive in healthy condition. Just to be safe, we always include at least one extra butterfly per order in the event that one should perish during shipment. In the very unlikely event that more butterflies perish during shipment, please contact us in accordance with the guidelines contained within our  Terms of Sale .

How do I care for them?
There is no need to worry! The care instructions are simple. A copy is included with every order and they are available online. When you receive the butterflies, take the release box or individual containers out of their insulated packaging. Next, store them in a cool/dark room (such as a closet at a comfortable room temperature) until the day of the event. They do not need to be fed or refrigerated. Try to disturb them as little as possible to keep them dormant.

When and how do I release my butterflies?
Butterflies should always be released during the daytime with at least 2 hours remaining before sunset. Butterflies do not fly at night, and if they are released too late during the day, they may fly sluggishly or may not fly at all. First, remove your Mass Release Box or Individual Release Containers from the shipping carton.

  • On a cool day (65-79 degrees), leave your packaged butterflies outside in a shaded area for one hour. After they warm up, they are ready to be released. Do not leave them in direct sunlight!
  • On a warm day (80-90 degrees), leave your packaged butterflies outside in a shaded area for 30 minutes to warm up. After they warm up, they are ready to be released. Do not leave them in direct sunlight!
  • On a hot day (90+ degrees), leave your packaged butterflies outside in a shaded area for 15-20 minutes to warm up. After they warm up, they are ready to be released. Do not leave them in direct sunlight!

These instructions can be followed for both Mass and Individual Releases.

What happens to the butterflies after the butterfly release, do they stay around the release area?
The butterflies are well known to linger around the release area for a few hours. In-fact, some stick around for weeks if the surrounding environment has their host plants. The rest will fly around until they find suitable plants, where they will continue on with their lives. Since we ship butterflies only to states with native butterfly populations, our butterflies will naturally be accustomed to the local environment.

What is the IBBA?
The International Butterfly Breeders Association (IBBA) is a membership based organization that adheres to strict guidelines following the raising, treatment and shipment of live butterflies. We recommend that you only purchase butterflies from an IBBA member company.

Fun fact! Despite popular myth, butterflies do not only live for a couple of days. The average life-span of most butterflies is 2-3 weeks. Monarchs have been known to live for months. There are even documented cases of Monarchs living up to 9 months!

Is it okay to release butterflies into the environment?
Yes! We ship butterflies to locations that already have native populations of the same species. For example, we do not ship Monarch butterflies west of the Continental Divide (California for example) due to genetic variations between Eastern and Western Monarch butterflies. The Painted Lady butterflies live naturally in every state within the continental United States and Alaska. Additionally the USDA requires all shippers of live butterflies to maintain shipping permits. Butterfly Releases by S has all proper documentation on file.

What about the weather, how does temperature affect the butterflies?
Butterflies should not be released if the temperature is below 65 degrees (20 degrees Celsius), as they will not fly as vibrantly. Simply put, the warmer the better (even if it’s a 100 degrees outside). Remember, these butterflies are coming from sunny Florida. They are accustomed to warm temperatures. We understand that weather is unpredictable, which is why we allow weather related cancellations. Please read our Terms of Sale for complete details.

What if I need to cancel my order?
Orders cancelled within 14 calendar days of the event are not refundable.
Orders cancelled more than 14 calendar days in advance of the event are subject to a $35.00 processing fee. The only exception is for weather related cancellations. Orders can be cancelled for undesirable weather conditions up to four calendar days before the event and are subject to a $35.00 processing fee. No weather related cancellations will be refunded with less than four calendar days notice. For example, if your release is scheduled for Saturday, your order must be cancelled by 5pm EST on Tuesday. Please read our Terms of Sale for complete details.

Can I return my live butterflies for a refund?
We do not accept the return of any live butterflies.

How can I get good photos of my live butterflies?
Butterflies are cold-blooded creatures. Keeping them cool is the key to taking amazing photographs of them wherever you want. Follow these simple steps:
1. Refrigerate the desired butterflies for no more than 30 minutes.
2. Quickly take the hibernated butterfly and place it where you intend to take the photo.
3. As the butterfly warms back up, it will start to stand up and flap its wings slowly. You will have a solid minute to take pictures before the butterfly flies away, so have your camera ready!
